| By: IronHorse@Ironhorse_somoFebruary 27, 2014Whenever I think of Pride and K-1, it always brings with it a feeling of...Melancholy? The Blues? - hard to describe, but I miss those days. I was still fairly new to MMA in those days, and there seemed to be 2 kinds of fans - the old school fans who followed various incarnations of MMA worldwide - Pride being the biggest - and Abu Dhabi Combat Grappling was another majorly important promotion - and those Americans who refused to look beyond our own borders, and thought the fledgeling UFC was the only MMA game in town. Come to think of it, things haven't changed much - except for it being much closer to the truth to say that the UFC is the only game in town, now. My heart broke when UFC bought Pride. I can remember the arguments back in the day as to who had the better roster (in all honesty, it should've been argued by weight class,) - Pride or UFC. In most cases, it was Pride - hands down. Any question of that should've long since been erased when Pride fighters stormed their way up the ladders of their new employers' and captured title after title. More than anything, I miss Pride because it was a major competitor for the UFC. And, competition only forced both promotions to put on better shows. Such can't be said, now - with the possible exception of Invicta. And, if it becomes big enough, I'll wager we'll see Invicta absorbed into the Borg Collective that is the UFC, as well. Ah well, at least I have the memories, and they are golden!

| I watched Pride FC events, but I honestly can't say I was a fan of the organization.
There were some great MMA legends that came to the UFC from Pride FC... but for my taste, things were a bit too entertainment oriented rather than more sports oriented.
...but you guys know me, I'm not a big fan of hoopla when it comes to MMA. | |

| Yeah, it did have those elements, Rich, but what you have to keep in mind is that PRIDE was based in Japan, and apparently the Japanese apparently like a little "pomp" with their fights, and they also seem drawn to "freakshow" fights. I mean, Bob Sapp had a somewhat lengthy tenure in PRIDE, whereas DFW would've dumped him toot sweet. Also, you would never have seen the current UFC champ fighting the likes of Hong-man Choi or Zuluzinho. | |
