April 1, 2014

I see there's one MMA site reporting that Gina Carano has signed with the UFC to fight Ronda Rousey for the women's bantamweight title on the UFC 175 card as the co-main event this coming July.

I love Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey, but I'm calling April Fool's Shenanigans on this story for a few reasons :

1) Today is April Fool's Day.

2) No other MMA outlets are reporting what should be a huge story regarding women's MMA.

3) Gina Carano hasn't fought since August 15, 2009.

4) Gina Carano is already signed with the UFC, and has been for years now... due to the fact that when Zuffa bought out Strikeforce, all existing contracts were picked-up by the UFC. I believe that Gina Carano had 1 fight remaining on her Strikeforce contract.

5) The "article" further states that; Gina would be immediately put into a title fight with Ronda... which I find difficult to believe since Gina has struggled in the past trying to make weight at 145, Gina also looks a bit "larger" since she's be acting in Hollywood, and to think Gina is going to return to fight for the belt AND fight at 135 is not very realistic in my opinion.

6) Just as Cris Justino doesn't deserve a shot at the title straight away, neither does Gina Carano.

The 3 most logical assumptions for the "Big Surprise / Huge News" pertaining to Ronda Rousey that Joe Rogan alluded to a week or so ago, was that the UFC would match-up Rousey against either Cris Justino, Holly Holm, or Gina Carano.

With interest waning a bit for some MMA fans since Cris Justino lost her Muay Thai bout a few days ago, and with DFW's prior comments that Justino would need to make weight at 135, AND that Justino would have to take a couple of fights at 135 before thinking about a shot at Ronda Rousey's belt... this match-up is not likely to happen in the very near future.

The Holly Holm angle seems to be unlikely at this point in time since DFW apparently had some issues with Holly's manager or management, which was pretty much the same issue that transpired with Gilbert Melendez just recently, but Melendez did in fact come to terms to re-sign with the UFC... so who knows ?

So back to the rumored story regarding Gina Carano... with Carano out of the fight game for so long, and her prior issues making weight at 145, I say this match-up is not likely in the near future either.

So what do you think... is the Rousey vs. Carano match-up really happening or is this simply an April Fool's Day joke ?

Let's hear your comments and opinions on this story, what you think the "Big Surprise / Huge News" is regarding Rousey that Rogan alluded to recently, and who do you think is the most likely opponent out of Justino, Holm, and Carano ?

I have to agree with you, Rich. I just can't see Gina stepping in against Ronda without even a warm-up fight, after a 4 year layoff. Not to mention, she'd need time for a SERIOUS training camp, if she hoped to make 135. I really can't see Gina walking away from the easy money of Hollywood and back into the rough & tumble of MMA without damned good reason - like maybe if the $$ dries up.

I doubt it's Cyborg, either. She signed a multi-fight deal with Invicta just last year. It seems Invicta and the UFC are pretty chummy, but I really can't see this being an "out of the blue" fight. I find myself thinking that Cris will fight at 135 at least once, maybe dropping to 135 in Invicta first, and fighting Lauren Murphy for her Bantamweight strap, before getting in the cage with Ronda.

I really find myself thinking it's going to be Holly Holm. That's what my gut's been telling me for awhile. It's an interesting style match-up for Ronda.

P.S. - auto-correct (or the computer's suggesting a word when you misspell a word) just damned near killed me. Can't remember which sentence, or who I was talking about, but I omitted the "G" in "fighting", and ended up typing "fihting." When I clicked auto-correct to fix the problem, one of the suggested replacement words was "Fisting." I thought to myself "Well, DAMN if that wouldn't change the nature of the contest!!!"  LOL  Hysterical  ROFL

Yeah, couldn't take a Carano fight seriously.  Gina got owned in her last fight, and the game has come a long way, especially the women's game, since 2009.  With no further fight experience, no serious training in approaching five years, and only eight fights total in her career, no way Gina represents a legitimate title challenge, particularly when the champion is a killer like Ronda Rousey.

Holly Holm has skills in the boxing ring, but her MMA career is not indicative, in my opinion, of someone with the well rounded skills to make a real title run.  I read an interview with her where she said her total ground experience was roughly eighteen months, prepping for the six fights she's had.   No way Holly mounts any kind of real threat against an Judo Olympic medalist and bantamweight world champion, at least not without more experience against higher level opponents.  Anybody remember Randy Couture/James Toney?

Personally, I'm a Christiane Justino fan, always have been, and believe she represents the only real challenge to Ronda Rousey in the MMA landscape.  Don't know if the powers that be will ever let her get in the cage with Ronda, even if she makes 135 and takes a couple warm-up fights, but if they do, Cyborg can win that fight.  She's got the striking power, the BJJ/ground game, and the toughness from fighting men in Brazil all these years to meet Rousey as an equal.

Wrote elsewhere that for me, Justino's loss in a Thai kickboxing match enhances not only her MMA cred, but might even improve her striking in MMA.  Cyborg's loss was her third pro Muy Thai fight, against a two time world champion with a 35-0-3 record.  Christiane was still standing at the end of round five, took some hard shots, traded some tough blows, and survived against a brilliant technical fighter in a whole other discipline.  She's the only real choice for a title shot, which is likely the reason it may never happen...

Bumping Thread Rousey/Carano/Justino threads since there's a lull in action before the next event.

This was an April's Fool joke, but DFW and the UFC brass do want it to happen.
